Glass Museum in Novy Bor

On the border of Lusatian Mountains in North Bohemia lies Novy Bor, a small town in terms of population, but great in its significance to glass, crystal and lighting industry. With many glassworks and factories scattered around the surroundings, Novy Bor stands for a venue and unofficial capital of glass in the region.

Our steps this time lead to main square of Novy Bor, in front of a yellow, Empire style building – the regional Glass Museum. Built in 1804, the house is connected to glass from the very start of its existence. The original owner, Johann Christopher Socher was a successful glass merchant. Later on, the house became property of famous glass exporters, Rautenstrauch family. It is not surprising that the town council afterward decided to situate there the museum dedicated to glass.

The museum offers high portfolio of activities and exhibitions. The permanent exposition from Baroque era is where one could see traditional tools and historical means of glass production. As several unique glass painting techniques were developed in Novy Bor, whole one floor is dedicated to painted glass. Going through various eras, the exposition ends with fascinating creations of contemporary Czech glass designers.

Nevertheless, the museum holds international symposiums, raising the importance of Novy Bor glass wordwide.

You are welcome to visit and experience yourself of the tradition and honest craftsmanship, which AYSAN also holds to.
